Walmart Opens Two New Neighborhood Markets in Springfield

New stores offer customers savings with grocery format

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 1, 2012 –Walmart opens its third Walmart Neighborhood Market in Springfield Oct. 3, located at 545 W. El Camino Alto. A fourth Springfield Walmart Neighborhood Market, located at 3536 W. Mount Vernon St., will open Oct. 17. The new stores will provide residents of Springfield with convenient locations to pick up all their grocery needs, including fresh produce.

Walmart Neighborhood Market Format
The first Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 200 Neighborhood Market stores nationwide. The stores offer quick and convenient shopping for groceries, pharmacy items and general merchandise.

New Springfield Stores
The new stores are tailored to the Springfield community, featuring wide varieties of fruits and vegetables, fresh bread, as well as meats, cheeses and prepared foods. The delis will feature Grab-and-Go sections with rotisserie chicken, fresh baked pizza and standard deli sides. In addition to the fresh produce, bakery and deli items, the stores will each carry a full line of groceries, including frozen foods, meat and dairy products and organic items.

Shoppers will also appreciate the convenience of the stores’ drive-thru pharmacies, along with full selections of health-related products and health and beauty areas. Additional areas include stationery, paper goods, pet products and hardware items. Customers can also print their own digital photos at the stores. Both stores will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The stores will offer Site-to-Store a free service that allows customers to ship online orders from www.walmart.com free to any Walmart store for pickup.

All Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets participate in the Pay with Cash program. This allows customers to order online at Walmart.com and pay for the items with cash at all stores in the U.S. Walmart is the first major retailer to offer online purchases without the need for banking services or a credit, debit or prepaid card.

These stores feature many energy-saving elements, part of Walmart’s overall efforts to reduce the total amount of energy used in stores and other operations. These features include LED lights in signage, freezer cases and the parking lots. This technology uses about 50 percent less energy than traditional lighting.

Openings Create 180 Jobs
Approximately 180 part- and full-time jobs were created with the store openings. Store manager Tara Pike will manage the new store on West El Camino Alto. Pike, a Kansas native, began her Walmart career in 2003 as a cashier at a store in Hutchinson, Kan.

“With our smaller format, our store is perfect for those on the go,” said Pike. “Whether they’re stocking up or need to pick up just a few items, our customers will be able to find what they need quickly and easily. Our customers will be able to find familiar brands and local products at great values, right in their own neighborhood.”

Store manager Doug Moon will manage the new store on West Mount Vernon Street. Moon, a Farmington native, began his Walmart career in 2000 as a produce sales associate at a store in Farmington. He has served as assistant manager in Fredericktown and Farmington and co-manager in Desloge before being named manager of the new Walmart Neighborhood Market set to open Oct. 17.

Grand-Opening Celebrations
The stores will host grand-opening celebrations at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the West El Camino Alto store, and Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the West Mount Vernon Street location. Store associates and local dignitaries, including members of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, will participate in brief ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

Throughout each grand-opening day, members of the Springfield community are invited to come by the stores to enjoy product samplings, giveaways and various entertainment events. Both stores will host a kids’ pumpkin decorating event on Oct. 27.

Community Groups Benefit from Grand-Opening Grants
Both grand-opening celebrations include grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups.

Healthier Food and “Great For You”
Walmart made a major commitment to make food healthier and healthier food more affordable, ensuring families won’t have to choose between a product that is good for them and one they can afford. Steps in the healthier food initiative include:

  • Reformulate thousands of packaged food items by 2015 by reducing sodium and added sugars and removing all remaining industrially produced trans fats.
  • Make healthier choices more affordable by providing savings on fresh produce and reducing the price premium on “better-for-you” items.
  • Provide solutions to address food deserts by bringing stores in underserved communities.
  • Increase charitable support for nutrition programs that help educate consumers about healthier food solutions and choices.

The “Great For You” icon appears on select Great Value and Marketside products as well as fresh and packaged fruits and vegetables. The icon was developed to help customers easily identify nutritious food options so they can make healthier eating choices for themselves and their families.
